Special Areas is a unique form of local government in the southeast part of Alberta. The Special Areas Board was set up under the Special Areas Act in response to the extreme hardship of the depression in the 1930s. The Special Areas Board is responsible for providing rural municipal government services and public land management to the residents of Special Areas 2, 3, and 4. Special Areas is an agency of the Government of Alberta (sometimes called a crown agency).

We hope you’ll get to know us and learn about the work we do for all the residents of the Special Areas and our neighbours throughout the region. While the pace may be a bit slower in our part of the province, we work hard to ensure an excellent quality of life for those who live and work here.
