The County of Stettler No. 6 is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to fill the position of Divisional Grader Beat Operator within the Operations Department. This position is responsible for the operation of a motor grader used in the maintenance and improvement of County roads within an assigned divisional grader beat.
Working with limited supervision, the Divisional Grader Beat Operator plays an important role in maintaining a safe and reliable rural road network. The successful candidate will have strong equipment operating skills, sound judgement, a commitment to workplace health and safety, and the ability to effectively plan and prioritize work based on road conditions, weather, traffic, and operational needs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate a motor grader to maintain gravel roads within an assigned divisional grader beat.
- Perform regular road maintenance, including grading, shaping, crowning, shoulder maintenance, spreading gravel, maintaining drainage, and addressing roadway deficiencies.
- Monitor road conditions throughout the assigned beat and identify areas requiring maintenance or repair.
- Plan and prioritize daily work based on road conditions, weather, traffic, safety concerns, and direction from the Operations Department.
- Perform snow removal, ice control, winging, and winter road maintenance as required.
- Complete daily equipment inspections and identify mechanical or safety concerns.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance, cleaning, greasing, and minor adjustments.
- Promptly report equipment deficiencies, damage, road hazards, infrastructure concerns, and other conditions requiring attention.
- Work safely around traffic, utilities, approaches, intersections, bridges, culverts, railway crossings, other equipment, and roadside hazards.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with County health and safety requirements, safe work procedures, and applicable legislation.
- Maintain accurate records, inspection documentation, and other required reports.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, other County employees, contractors, landowners, and members of the public.
- Respond professionally to questions or concerns from residents and refer matters requiring further attention to the appropriate supervisor.
- Work independently while maintaining regular communication with the Operations Department.
- Provide operational coverage in other areas during staff absences, emergencies, or peak operational periods as required.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement; Class 1 is considered an asset.
- Previous experience operating a motor grader is strongly preferred.
- Experience maintaining gravel roads in a rural or municipal environment is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of gravel road construction and maintenance practices, drainage, road shaping, and winter maintenance.
- Experience operating additional heavy equipment is considered an asset.
- Ability to recognize changing road, weather, and ground conditions and adjust operations accordingly.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to complete routine equipment inspections and maintenance.
- Strong judgement, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and effectively manage an assigned work area.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of the Operations team.
- Commitment to safe work practices and the responsible operation of County equipment.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in a variety of weather and environmental conditions.
- Willingness to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, or holidays when required for winter maintenance, emergencies, or operational needs.
Hours of Work
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a 30-minute paid lunch break, for approximately 44 to 50 hours per week. Hours may vary as required to respond to weather conditions, operational needs and other circumstances.
