Job Title: Part-Time Animal Care Attendant
Location: Drumheller & District Humane Society (DDHS)
Position Type: Part-Time (25 hours a week), flexible hours
Position Summary: The Drumheller & District Humane Society (DDHS) is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly organized individual to join our team as a Part-Time Animal Care Attendant. This dynamic role is responsible for overseeing the daily care of the animals at the shelter, ensuring that both the animals and the facility are cared for in a safe, clean, and positive environment. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to animal welfare in the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Care & Shelter Operations:
- Adhere to all DDHS policies and procedures.
- Ensure the wellbeing of all animals in our care. Socialize and enrich the animals to support their physical and mental well-being.
- Perform daily animal care duties, including kennel cleaning and disinfecting, scooping litter boxes, feeding animals in appropriate amounts on schedule, and administering medications as required.
- Assist with the daily operation of the canine program, including dog walking, enrichment, animal care, and volunteer shift coverage as needed.
- Maintain a hygienic and safe environment for all animals by conducting general cleaning and disinfecting, washing and folding laundry, sweeping & mopping.
- Follow all infection control procedures.
- Oversee the isolation area, ensuring health and safety standards are followed.
- Monitor the health and behavior of animals and report concerns to the appropriate team members.
- Administer medications and treatments as directed.
- After animals return from vet appointments - manage follow-up care instructions (including communicating them to the volunteers).
- Organize cats in a way that prevents fights and injury.
- Keep kennels labelled with cats names.
- Wipe kennel bars regularly.
Volunteers:
- Support volunteer recruitment, training, and retention to ensure the shelter has a motivated and effective team of volunteers.
- Assist in creating a welcoming and positive environment for volunteers, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to succeed.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance to volunteers, helping them to develop new skills and ensure they have rewarding experiences.
Board:
- keep in good communication with, and collaborate with the board, example: ideas, health and safety concerns, complaints, issues etc.
Building:
- Report any building maintenance needs such as de-icing, snow shoveling, furnace issues, plumbing leaks etc.
- Assures building is properly closed down at end of the day: temperature set correctly for weather, lights off, windows shut and locked, doors locked.
Qualifications:
- Previous education and/or experience in animal care, animal welfare, or a similar role is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the public, volunteers, donors, and team members.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
- A passion for animal welfare and community engagement.
- A clear criminal record check.
- A drivers license and daily access to a reliable vehicle.
Work Conditions:
- This is a part-time position.. The current set shifts are Monday-Friday from 9:30AM-11:30AM.
- Must be able to lift 40lbs and stand, crouch, bend for the majority of your shift.
- Work is performed in a shelter environment (loud, odors, physically demanding)
